About The Song

“You’re My Best Friend” is a song written by Wayland Holyfield, and recorded by American country music artist Don Williams. It was released in April 1975 as the first single and title track from the album You’re My Best Friend.
After Don Williams’ breakthrough in 1974, he came back the following year with the release of “You’re My Best Friend,” which was released as the first single and title track off his fourth album. The song brought Williams his second No. 1 hit, as it ranked atop Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart and marked Williams’ true beginning as a commercial juggernaut, as the song topped Canadian RPM Country Tracks. It even cracked the U.K. Singles Chart, where it peaked at No. 35.

It has since become one of his signature tunes and paved the way for several songs by Don Williams to enter the country charts.

Written by songwriter Wayland Holyfield, “You’re My Best Friend” is a simple, genuine sentiment of love and friendship to a long-term romantic partner.

“You’re my bread when I’m hungry. You’re my shelter from troubled winds. You’re my anchor in life’s ocean. But most of all, you’re my best friend,” the song goes.

Holyfield was actually just new in the songwriting business when he penned this song about his wife, but he knew it would resonate with every person who is in that type of special relationship. Indeed, it was! The moment Don Williams began singing the romantic ballad in his shows, he noticed how the audiences had already picked up all the lyrics. It then quickly grew into a major sing-along segment of his live shows.

The song also marked a long and fruitful partnership between Williams and Holyfield. “You’re My Best Friend” was actually Holyfield’s first No. 1 hit on the U.S. charts in a career that would see him writing songs for some of the most notable country artists – from Charley Pride to George Strait.

Lyric

🎵 Let’s sing along with the lyrics! 🎤

You placed gold on my finger
You brought love like I’ve never known
You gave life to our children
And to me a reason to go on.

You’re my bread when I’m hungry
You’re my shelter from troubled winds
You’re my anchor in life’s ocean
But most of all you’re my best friend.

When I need hope and inspiration
You’re always strong when I’m tired and weak
I could search This whole world over
You’ll still be everything that I need.

You’re my bread when I’m hungry
You’re my shelter from troubled winds
You’re my anchor in life’s ocean
But most of all you’re my best friend.

You’re my bread when I’m hungry
You’re my shelter from troubled winds
You’re my anchor in life’s ocean
But most of all you’re my best friend…
